VITA Supervising St. Landry Parish Adult Education Program

The VITA Adult Ed Center has recently been established in the Louisiana Technical College, T.H. Harris campus in Opelousas. VITA is providing adult education services at no charge offering both morning and evening classes five days a week. The Opelousas Housing Authority is collaborating with VITA, providing space and transportation.
The adult ed staff includes Betty Haynes, Judy Goodstone, PhD., Julia Joubert, and Ben Ortega. Dr. Goodstone had been extremely helpful in outlining an excellent curriculum for the program.

Beginning ESL Class Offers English Instruction
|
VITA now offers a beginning ESL (English as a Second Language) class in the Training Room on Mondays and Wednesdays from 9:00 until 10:30 a.m. The class is comprised of students whose native language is Spanish. VITA Staff Member Janel Fontenot provides the instruction with the help of ESL student assistants. The students work on speaking and reading skills.

VITA Student Receives American Citizenship
|
VITA Student Mary Hightower recently received her American citizenship. Mary is a native of Mexico City, Mexico and has lived in the U.S. for nearly sixteen years.
Mary came to America after marrying Jim Hightower. They lived in Puerto Rico and Mexico before moving to Lafayette. She worked as a dental technician before retiring to be a full-time homemaker. The couple has two daughters, Alexandra, 10, and Cynthia, 7.
Mary said that her motivation to attend VITA was to improve her English for her children. ~SWith two girls in school, I want to improve my English to help them with their school work. Since I live here, I need to speak English well.

VITA Training Seminar Schedule
VITA training seminars are tentatively planned this year. The following seminar is scheduled in the VITA Training Room on the fourth floor of Whitney Bank in Lafayette.

U.L.L. Interns Assist VITA
|
Two U.L.L. interns assisted the VITA staff for the fall semester. They tutored adult learners, assisted in the computer lab, and helped with office work.
Interns Chasity Borel and Tiffany Lewis are both graduating seniors majoring in Child and Family Studies. Chasity is from Cecilia and plans to attend graduate school at Southern University in New Orleans to obtain a master~Rs degree in social work. Tiffany Lewis is from Lafayette and intends to pursue a teaching career.

Multicultural Festival Raises Funds for VITA
|
Proceeds from the fifth Annual Multicultural Festival were recently presented to VITA. The festival was sponsored by Glouchester Manor and Mimosa Place. The festival featured music, food and fun for residents of the facilities. Many children~Rs activities were also offered. A raffle fundraiser provided the funds for the donation.
