In 2003, VITA was a recipient of the AGC Charity Golf Tournament (pictured above) held at Spanish Trail Golf Course in Cade. VITA will again receive funds from the tourney to be held this year at Le Triomphe Golf Course & Country Club on Monday, May 14.

Local Golf Tournament Will Benefit VITA
The 18th Annual Charity Golf Tournament sponsored by Lafayette District Louisiana Associated General Contractors (AGC) will be held Monday, May 14 at Le Triomphe Golf & Country Club. This year contributions will go to VITA and the Lafayette AGC Construction Scholarship.

The VITA staff will assist with the tournament. We hope that tutors might also support the tournament as a golfer, sponsor, tournament volunteer, or contribute a door prize. This fundraiser will help provide much needed financial assistance to the VITA program.

If you would like more information about how to help with the tournament, please call the VITA office at (337) 234-4600.

VITA Annual Recognition Banquet Scheduled for the Fall
The VITA Annual Recognition Banquet will be held on September 30, 2007 at Vermilionville. The banquet, usually scheduled in the spring, will be postponed due to VITA's participation in the AGC Golf Tournament in May. Details about the banquet will be forthcoming in the summer issue of the newsletter.

VITA's StoryCorps participants were (left to right) Isaac Julian, Delores Labbe and Moses Morgan. Lorena Comeaux is not pictured.

StoryCorps Chronicles VITA Students' Lives
StoryCorps' Mobile StoryBooth recently visited Lafayette and invited VITA to participate in several interview sessions. Student interviews were recorded through a partnership between American Folklife Center at the Library of Congress and National Public Radio (NPR). Excerpts of selected interviews are broadcast locally on KRVS, nationally on Fridays on NPR's Morning Edition, and accessible online at www.storycorps.net.

VITA students participating in the interviews were Loretta Comeaux, Delores Labbe and Isaac Julian. Moses Morgan, a VITA Board Member and former student, also took part in an interview. They each received copies of the recordings.

We plan to play selections from the recordings at the next Student Support Meeting.
Does Your Student Have a Good Story to Tell?
VITA is planning a new publication of student writings in Expressions of Life and Language IV. We are asking tutors to encourage their students to spend some time on the writing project during their tutoring sessions. Stories, poems or essays will be considered for publication in the book. Please mail or fax the writings to the VITA office and include both the student's name and yours. The address is VITA, 905 Jefferson St., Ste. 404, Lafayette, LA 70501. The fax number is (337) 234-4672. Please send it in by Friday, May 25, 2007.
Mardi Gras Party Offered More than King Cake
This year's Mardi Gras King Cake Party was held February 6. King cakes from several local bakeries provided a variety of sweets of the season. In addition, students learned more about Mardi Gras history and traditions. They also played Mardi Gras Bingo to win holiday prizes. The fun occasion gave students and tutors a chance to meet and socialize.

Newspaper Donations Sponsored by Pinhook Wal-Mart
VITA receives a donation of ten newspapers each Wednesday through The Daily Advertiser's Partners in Literacy Project. VITA's sponsor this year is the Wal-Mart on Pinhook Road. We appreciate Wal-Mart's and The Daily Advertiser's assistance with our literacy effort. The Daily Advertiser also offers a special second free subscription for VITA tutors. Each VITA tutor who has a subscription may also receive a second one free for their student. For more information about how to request this service, call Judy Broussard at Partners in Literacy at The Daily Advertiser at (337) 289-6492.
VITA Executive Director Jeanette Barras (left) recently presented a Celebrate Literacy Award to Sam's Club Membership Coordinator Charisse Comeaux. The award was bestowed in appreciation for the donation of a Sam's Literacy Grant to VITA. The inscription on the plaque read, "In grateful appreciation of outstanding service to the community in promoting literacy."

Try Bingo Websites for Fun Group Activities
While searching for websites to make our Mardi Gras Bingo cards, we found two sites that might be useful for tutors for group instruction. Tutors could make bingo cards with vocabulary from the stories the students are reading or on seasonal topics.

On http://www.dltk-cards.com/bingo/bingo1.asp, prepared bingo cards are offered on a variety of topics and levels. Some offer words and/or pictures.

http://www.teach-nology.com/web_tools/materials/bingo/, blank bingo cards are available. The preparer chooses a word bank for each card. The words can be reshuffled to make different combinations.
