Bruce Snow Finds Satisfaction in Tutoring
|
VITA Tutor Bruce Snow turned his interest in different cultures and foreign travel into a new vocation. Snow had retired from his careers in geology and data management when he volunteered to be a VITA tutor three years ago. Besides assisting with the VITA Computer Lab, he expressed an interest in tutoring Spanish-speaking students. Because of his own extensive travels and knowledge of Spanish, Bruce was the ideal tutor to

help ESL (English as a Second Language) students become acclimated to their new community.
Bruce has tutored students from Cuba, Peru, Spain and even China. Presently, he is tutoring Yolanda Rodriquez from Cuba and Nora Rodriquez from Peru. Bruce says, "One of my favorite parts of traveling is meeting people and sharing cultures, and with tutoring I can do that without leaving town."
Bruce highly recommends tutoring as a very satisfying pastime. "When I retired I worried about losing my identity because I wasn't working. But tutoring gives me a focus and the same effect as working." In addition to his tutoring and computer assistance, Bruce substitutes for the ESL group classes and plays the guitar at VITA functions.
Bruce is a native of Boston, Massachusetts, but has lived in Lafayette for 31 years. He and his wife, Bunny, have a daughter, Heather, who lives in Austin, Texas.
