What We Do
Volunteer Instructors Teaching Adults, or VITA, has served the Acadiana area for over 30 years, providing free, confidential education to adults who want to improve their reading skills, learn to speak English, or begin pursuing their high school equivalency diploma. We provide classes, computer instruction, and one-on-one tutoring.
How We Do It
VITA enlists volunteers from the community to work directly with our students. Tutors complete a five- hour training workshop and are then matched with a student. Volunteers and students work together for a few hours a week.
Why We Do It
34 million adults in the United States read below a fifth-grade level. Nearly 30% of Americans over the age of sixteen, or close to 70 million adults, cannot read above an eighth grade level. These
literacy rates
cost us an estimated $225 billion in lost productivity and tax revenue.
Individuals at the lowest level of literacy have higher unemployment rates, and are substantially more likely to be living in poverty. Lack of literacy skills is a serious problem in both our nation and our community.
