PRESIDENT'S' DAY
NAME_____________________________________________
DATE_____________________________________________
The February birthdays of President George Washington and President Abraham Lincoln were celebrated on two separate dates until President Richard M. Nixon combined the two holidays in 1971. A federal holiday celebrated on the third Monday in February is now celebrated to honor all American Presidents. We still study the biographies of President Washington and President Lincoln during the month of February because it was their birthdays that were celebrated prior to 1971. George Washington (1732-1799n) is known as the first President of the United States of America. A native of Virginia, he is most often called " the father of our country", Washington is often remembered as a moral, well-mannered gentleman. He was appointed as the Commander in Chief of the Continental Army in 1775 and led his troops in the American Revolution. Married to Martha Dandridge Custis, a widow, Washington was elected to the Presidency in 1787. He served as President of the United States until he retired to his home Mount Vernon and died of a throat infection in 1799. President Abraham Lincoln was the sixteenth President of the United States. He was born in Kentucky in 1809 and moved with his family to Illinois where he grew up. He was married to Mary Todd Lincoln and they had four boys. Only one of his sons lived past childhood. Lincoln is remembered for ending slavery in America with the signing of the "Emancipation Proclamation" in 1863. He was assassinated by John Wilkes Booth in 1865,while President Lincoln was attending a play at the Ford's Theater in Washington,D.C.
