ABOUT US
The League of Women Voters is a nonpartisan, multi-issue organization that encourages the informed and active participation of citizens in government. The League works to increase understanding of major public policy issues, and influences public policy through education and advocacy. We are an organization of women and men who want to make a difference.
The League has fought since 1920 to improve our system of government. We neither support nor oppose candidates for office. At the same time, the League works to influence policy through advocacy and impact public policies. The League is a grassroots organization, working at the national, state, and local levels.
NON-PARTISAN POLICY
As a nonpartisan, multi-issue organization, the League does not support or endorse candidates. However, the League encourages the informed and active participation of citizens in government.
The most important consideration is to be aware of when you are being perceived as an individual, and when you are perceived as a League member. At a League meeting or event, speaking about a League position or representing the League before the public, members should abide by the League's non-partisan policy.
Outside their League affiliation, members are encouraged to be active participants in any political activities in which they choose to engage -- attending a candidate rally, commenting on local policy, supporting or opposing candidates, etc.
WHO CAN BECOME A MEMBER
Since 1975 both men and women have been members of the League. Persons at least 16 years of age who join the League shall be voting members of local Leagues, state Leagues, and of the LWVUS.
BENEFITS OF LEAGUE MEMBERSHIP
When you join the League at the local level, you also become a member at the state and national levels. Therefore, by being a member of a local League you actually get to influence the work of a powerful, national organization.
