How Our Program Works
Our program matches community volunteers with individual students in order to provide one-on-one instruction. VITA will provide both the training and the materials needed -- no lesson planning required! Sites to meet with your student are available throughout the community, as well as at our offices.

Time Commitment & Eligibility
We ask for a 4-hour a week commitment; tutors generally meet with their respective student twice weekly for 2-hour sessions, certain holidays excepted. In order to tutor for VITA, you must meet the following qualifications:
  • Be at least 18 years old
  • Have a high school diploma or equivalent
  • Complete our tutor training workshop
  • Able to volunteer 4 hours a week
  • Submit simple paperwork on student progress
Please note that you do not need any prior teaching experience. If you can read and write, chances are you can teach someone else to as well!


Tutor Training Workshop
All volunteers must complete a 5-hour training workshop that provides further information on our program and teaching techniques. The workshop is broken in to two sessions; both are mandatory. See below for information on our next training workshop:

Session 1 is a prerequisite to Session 2
