Changing Lives Through Literacy

VITA Programs

One-to-One-Tutoring

A VITA-trained tutor and student pair meet at a community location, library, church, fire station, etc convenient to both.

Pairs meet 4 hours per week.

Pairs work on  reading, writing, and speaking skills.  

Day or evening sessions can be planned to accommodate work schedules.  

VITA staff members provide support and guidance to all tutors and students.

 

Small-Group Instruction

Qualified, experienced staff members  and volunteers teach small groups of VITA students.  

Course offerings include reading comprehension, grammar, math, writing, and conversational English.

 

English as a Second Language (ESL)

Classes and tutoring are available for individuals with limited English skills. 

 Topics offered for the ESL student are reading comprehension, grammar, vocabulary, and conversational English.

 

Workplace Literacy

The goal of workplace literacy is to close the gap between the employee's literacy level and those demanded by existing and anticipated occupational requirements.  

Programs are customized to the individual needs and desires of those in the workplace.  

VITA tutors and materials related to the workplace and/or general knowledge are provided.

 

Financial Literacy

Program sponsored by Whitney National Bank and the FDIC.

Program fosters financial stability for individuals and the community.

Workshop presented on the fourth Thursday of each month through December 2010 at 10:30am to noon.
