Volunteer Tutoring

What kind of qualifications do I need to tutor?

high school graduate
able to volunteer 4 hours per week
one-year commitment or seventy hours
complete 5 hours of tutoring training
file monthly reports on student attendance and progress

How does VITA match tutors and students for one-to-one training?

consideration of volunteer preference and compatibility
consideration of times both tutor and student are able to meet
similar interests or backgrounds such as sewing, cars, job, grandchildren, etc. make a tutor/student team a success

Do I need any teaching experience?

No, a love of reading and an ability to share that gift with others is all that is required

How do I become a student?

you must be 17 years old and not currently enrolled in high school
call VITA (337)234-4600 and set up an appointment with Norma, Sheila, or Kathy
come in and fill out forms to be a part of VITA
assess your skills with a VITA staff member
agree to come to class and/or meet with a tutor 4 hours a week

How much does it cost?

VITA is free to all adults 17 years old and not currently enrolled in high school

agree to attend classes
