How the VITA Program Works
Tutors
 |
VITA provides training, materials, and support to qualified
volunteers, enabling them to assist adults in acquiring basic reading and
writing skills.
|
 |
Using easy-to-follow manuals, these specially trained volunteers
teach reading and writing to low-literacy adults or to English as a Second
Language (ESL) learners.
|
 |
Tutoring sessions are held for two hours,
twice each week at a time and community location that is convenient to both
tutor and student.

Please see our Frequently Asked Questions
page for more
information.
Students
 |
To qualify for the program, a student must be at least seventeen
years-of-age and no longer enrolled in school. |
 |
A prospective student may
have dropped out of school or may have received a high school diploma but reads
and writes below a ninth grade reading level. |
 |
Service is free-of-charge. |
ESL Students
 |
VITA also offers tutoring to ESL students who want to improve
their English reading, writing and speaking skills or who want to study for the
Test of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL). |
All students must complete an initial interview where the
student learns about the program and shares his/her goals with a staff member.
After taking a reading assessment and qualifying to enter the program, a student
may be matched with a tutor. Students can also participate in classes and use the
available computer lab.
